MIRACLE FESTIVAL

Oral Transmission of the Dharmakaya Prayer

Wednesday, March 4, 2026  9 am pacific time

English with Spanish Translation | Online  |  All Welcome

The Miracle Festival is not only a highly significant Buddhist holiday, but according to tradition, it also marks the full moon of the fifteenth day when the Buddha Tonpa Shenrab was born.

It is taught that the Dharmakaya Prayer is particularly powerful when practiced during festivals of the Buddha. If one recites this prayer, one can achieve a result equivalent to having recited the entirety of the Buddha’s teachings. The central theme of this prayer is the meditative meaning of the Great Perfection (Dzogchen), the pinnacle of vehicles. It addresses how to cultivate the power of higher cognition through practice,  understanding how sentient beings wander in confusion and experience suffering by failing to realize its meaning, and how excellent practitioners attain liberation and bliss upon realizing it.

Furthermore, it can connect many levels of practitioners according to their own understanding, assist in the development of one’s meditation, and help one remember the vital points of meditation at the time of death, thereby benefiting the transition of consciousness at the moment of passing. These topics can serve as a basis for your daily practice, focusing on meditative concentration, and can be used for training and prayer.

If time permits, the Bön accounts regarding the relationship between the Buddha Shakyamuni and Buddha Tonpa Shenrab will be introduced.

Therefore, everyone is invited to participate in this Miracle Festival!

Introduction to the Secret Refuge

The practice of seeking refuge is of great importance. Why do we need this practice? It is because we and all other sentient beings face difficulties and suffering, and thus we seek assistance. Among the many ways of taking refuge,  the topic introduced here is “secret refuge.” This is a method of taking refuge by recognizing the primordially abiding nature of one’s own energy and practicing its inherent qualities.

If one gains experience through this method, it will be effective in alleviating our suffering and can even eliminate the very root of that suffering. All forms of misery arise from temporary phenomena. As one’s realization of this practice deepens, you become able to master your own difficulties and impure perceptions, and will eventually attain ultimate qualities.

Self-knowing primordial wisdom is the essence of the primordial Buddha. As stated in the scriptures, beholding this self-knowing primordial wisdom is equivalent to seeing the faces of a thousand Buddhas.

Usually, when we are happy, we do not feel the need for protection, yet in truth, the situation is otherwise. When we reflect on how we fluctuate between joy and unhappiness, how we encounter hardships, adverse conditions, or illness, how we undergo the process of aging and senescence, and the numerous troubles involving family, friends, work, and natural disasters—we realize that everyone must seek protection. Therefore, Geshe shall discuss the vital practice of taking refuge.
